IELTS Speaking Assessment Criteria
Part 2-Cue Card and Part 3- General Discussion.
Each part of the speaking test is analysed by the examiner with respect to four different criteria:
- Fluency and Coherence
- Lexical Resource
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy
- Pronunciation
All the criteria carry equal weightage and IELTS band score for Speaking test is the average of correct answers scores.
IELTS Speaking Marking and Assessment
IELTS Speaking test is assessed by British Council or IDP: IELTS Australia certificated IELTS examiners with relevant teaching qualification.
IELTS scores are reported in whole and half bands.
IELTS speaking test is assessed based on mainly four criteria which describe your test performance as per the IELTS 9 bands scale.
IELTS Speaking Assessment Criteria
Fluency and Coherence | This refers to your ability to speak with standard levels of effort, continuity and merge ideas and language together to form a logical speech. The fundamental factors of fluency are speech rate and continuity and for coherence, the key factors are rational sequencing of sentences, narration, argument and relevant use of cohesive devices such as connectors, pronouns and conjunctions, within and between sentences. |
Lexical Resource | Lexical resource is the criteria which refers to the range of vocabulary used and the accuracy with which meanings and attitudes can be expressed. The key factors of lexical resource are the variety and relevancy of the words used with no reluctance. |
Grammatical range and Accuracy | This signifies the range, accuracy and suitable use of your grammatical resource. The basic factors of this criterion are the length, range, complexity of the spoken sentences to give an arranged format of information, assessment of any grammatical mistakes and its effect on communication. |
Pronunciation | This refers to your ability to present understandable speech to fulfil the test requirements. The basic indicators of pronunciation are the amount of difficulty caused to the listener with ineffective speech. |
